Iyengar Yoga - designed to make yoga accessible to everyone.

You can also expect highly trained teachers who have a deep understanding of how to teach the asana and how to help students improve and develop their own yoga practice to get maximum benefit from it. Our classes support students in their progression from the simple through to the more advanced poses. Iyengar Yoga is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Iyengar Yoga is known for its use of props – such as belts, blocks and blankets.  B.K.S. Iyengar was a creative teacher and he invented the use of props sometimes used to help students learn asanas correctly, avoiding the risk of injury or strain, sometimes used to intensify work in asana, sometimes used to support the body in poses that are held for a longer period so that their therapeutic benefit can be felt.

You can find lots more information about Iyengar yoga on a new online resource website  called Yoga Vastu.

B.K.S Iyengar (1918-2014) was the world’s most respected yoga teacher. He lived for most of his life in Pune, India where he established the first Iyengar Yoga Institute but he also travelled widely and was instrumental in bringing yoga to the West. He wrote ‘Light on Yoga’ published almost 40 years ago, which remains the definitive guide to the yoga asana (postures).

Yoga was traditionally only taught by a guru to a select few pupils but Iyengar firmly believed yoga was for everyone and pioneered yoga teaching for all. To spread the teaching of yoga he created a safe and structured approach to the teaching of yoga asana which has since been established in approximately 40 countries worldwide.

You can expect Iyengar Yoga to be very varied – sometimes fast paced and sometimes slower with postures held for longer and an emphasis on precise alignment and detail to develop strength, mobility and stability.
